During a question and answer session, Ajahn Abhinando asked what the difference between Zen and Theravada. To answer, we told a story about the great Zen master Taisen Deshimaru:
When I was grown, Deshimaru Taisen called back to Japan to asist at a ceremony in his honor for his role in the spread of zen Europe. As grand master, was expected of him that he was sitting in zazen for a long period of time.
But Deshimaru it was an older man and had some bladder problems, so I had to go to the bathroom every few minutes. Would not be able to endure sitting so long without having to urinate. So I asked the organizers what to do. They replied: "Master, Zen is very important to follow the forms. If you have to urinate, do it on the pad and it will clean it later." So he did.
Abhinando concluded: "The difference between Zen and Theravada is that in Zen, if you have to pee, you pee on the pad. In the Theravada, get up and go to the bathroom."
